The Full Checklist

1. Book Your Movers at Least 3 Weeks Out

Good moving companies in Miami fill up fast — especially in summer and at the end of the month, when most leases turn over. If you’re planning a local move in North Miami, aim to book at least 3 weeks in advance. For long-distance moves, give yourself 4–6 weeks. Last-minute bookings limit your options and often cost more.

2. Declutter Before You Pack

Moving is the perfect excuse to get rid of things you don’t use. Go room by room and separate items into keep, donate, sell, and trash. The less you move, the faster — and cheaper — the job. If you’re paying by the hour, every box counts.

3. Gather Packing Supplies Early

Don’t wait until the week before to look for boxes. You’ll need: moving boxes in various sizes, packing tape, bubble wrap or packing paper, markers for labeling, and mattress bags. Start collecting at least 2 weeks out. If you’d rather skip this entirely, our packing and unpacking service takes care of it for you.

4. Notify Important Contacts of Your Address Change

Make a list of everyone who needs your new address: USPS (set up mail forwarding), your bank and credit cards, employer, doctor and dentist, subscriptions, and the Florida DMV (you have 30 days to update your driver’s license after moving). Missing this step means important mail and documents go to the wrong address.

5.Reserve the Elevator (Condo and Apartment Moves)

If you’re moving out of or into a condo or apartment building — common in Aventura, Bal Harbour, and North Miami Beach — your building likely requires an elevator reservation and a certificate of insurance from your moving company. Contact building management at least 2 weeks in advance. Our team is fully insured and can provide the documentation your building needs. Learn more about our apartment and condo moving service.

Miami-specific tip: Many condo buildings only allow moves Monday through Friday, and only between 9am and 5pm. Check the rules early — this affects which day you can book.

6.Pack a Moving Day Essentials Bag

This is the one bag that doesn’t go on the truck. Pack it the night before with: phone charger, medications, a change of clothes, toiletries, keys to the new place, important documents, snacks, and cash or card for tips. You’ll thank yourself when everything else is in boxes.

7. Label Every Box by Room

Write the destination room on every box — Kitchen, Master Bedroom, Bathroom, etc. Add a short note for fragile items. This lets the movers place boxes directly in the right room, saving you from having to move them yourself after the truck leaves. Color-coded labels work even better if you have kids helping.

8. Disconnect and Defrost Appliances

At least 24 hours before moving day: unplug and defrost the refrigerator, disconnect the washing machine (drain the hose), and unplug all electronics. Appliances that aren’t properly prepared can leak, get damaged in transit, or slow down the movers significantly.

9. Do a Final Walkthrough Before the Truck Leaves

Once everything is loaded, walk through every room — including closets, cabinets, the garage, and outdoor areas. Check that nothing was left behind, all windows are closed, and utilities are set to be transferred or shut off. It takes 5 minutes and prevents a trip back across Miami.

10. Confirm All Details With Your Moving Company

The day before your move, call your movers to confirm: arrival time, address (both pickup and delivery), special items like heavy furniture or artwork, and payment method. A quick confirmation call avoids surprises on the day. If you’ve booked with SuperMovers FL, we’ll reach out to confirm everything in advance — but feel free to contact us with any questions beforehand.

One more thing: Miami heat is no joke in summer. Moving day means long hours of physical work — make sure there’s water available for the crew and plan to have the AC on at the new place before you arrive.
